What is Zalgo text and how does it work?
Zalgo text looks like a digital glitch or an ancient curse eating through your screen. Despite its supernatural appearance in online horror memes and creepypasta stories, it relies entirely on a standard feature of Unicode: Combining Diacritical Marks.
In everyday human languages, combining marks add small accents to letters, like the acute accent in café or the tilde in año. In the Unicode standard, these accent characters take up zero horizontal width. Instead, they attach directly to the preceding letter.
Our Zalgo engine takes standard keyboard characters and stacks multiple random combining marks above, across, and beneath each letter. As these marks accumulate vertically, they bleed across line breaks and create the signature decaying aesthetic.

Safe intensity levels: avoiding layout overflow and chat bans
Because combining marks stack vertically, extreme intensity can cause visual problems:
- Low Intensity (Level 1–2): Adds subtle static and minor glitches. Safe for social bios, forum signatures, and standard chat rooms.
- Medium Intensity (Level 3–4): Distinctly creepy with visible ascending and dripping marks. Perfect for gaming handles and spooky captions.
- High Intensity (Level 5+): Massive distortion that bleeds across adjacent text lines. Use with caution, as it can make sentences unreadable.
Many large Discord gaming servers and online forums run moderation bots (such as Dyno or Carl-bot) that automatically detect and remove messages with excessive combining marks [VERIFY: Discord automod Zalgo]. Keeping your intensity moderate prevents accidental chat mutes.
Where you can use Zalgo text (and where automods block it)
You can use corrupted text in many creative spaces:
- Gaming Nicknames: Stand out in Steam, Roblox, or Minecraft profiles with a cursed character name.
- Halloween & Creepypasta Posts: Craft spooky stories, horror ARG clues, and surreal memes.
- Discord Statuses: Add eerie mood text to your personal profile status.
However, avoid using Zalgo in primary account login handles, official support tickets, or critical announcements.
How to remove Zalgo text and clean corrupted characters
If someone sends you a message covered in Zalgo marks and you need to read the original text, you can clean it easily:
- Copy the corrupted message to your clipboard.
- Paste it into an online regex stripper or text cleaner that removes characters in the
\u0300-\u036Frange [VERIFY: Unicode block range]. - The stripped output leaves only the underlying plain Latin letters, completely restoring normal readability.
Screen readers and accessibility warning
Zalgo text is completely inaccessible to screen readers. Assistive software attempts to announce every single combining mark individually (such as “Latin small letter a with combining ring above with combining grave accent with combining dot below”).
This creates a long, unintelligible string of spoken audio for visually impaired visitors. Never use Zalgo text for essential navigation, safety alerts, or core instructions. Use it solely for entertainment, short decorative tags, and creative art.
